Tech fabric is revolutionizing the world of apparel, especially in sports. Incorporating technology into clothing helps enhance athletic performance and guard against extreme temperatures, UV rays, and space radiation.
It also increases durability and enables new features. For example, you can find tech fabrics that can be infused with odor-fighting chemicals or even water-resistant materials.
1. Water-resistant
Depending on what you use your gear for, it might need to be able to withstand some water pressure. This is where waterproof Technology Fabric comes in. These fabrics are impervious to water - anything that it comes into contact with will simply run off rather than be absorbed by the fabric.
Typically, however, waterproof Technology Fabric has less breathability than non-waterproof ones. To improve the breathability of a waterproof fabric, a durable water repellent treatment can be applied.
This coating, which follows the contours of the fabric’s fibers and avoids clogging pores, can be applied either through a spray-on or wash-in process. This helps to improve the fabric’s moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR) and drying times. It also prevents the outer layer of a waterproof breathable Technology Fabric from getting saturated by moisture and losing its ability to keep out water.
2. Moisture-wicking
We often see clothing labels mention that their fabric is made of moisture-wicking tech. But what does that really mean? Moisture-wicking fabric moves sweat away from the skin, allowing it to evaporate more quickly than regular cotton. The technology behind it involves capillary action, which pulls moisture through the tiny spaces in the fabric.
The best moisture-wicking fabrics use synthetic blends, such as polyester and polypropylene. They're lightweight and breathable, which makes them ideal for active wear. They also dry quickly, allowing you to keep cool in warm weather and warm in cold weather.
Some of the best options include silver, which improves a fabric's wicking properties by inhibiting odor-causing bacteria from growing. It also adds a softness that feels great against the skin.
3. Antimicrobial
Antimicrobial technology is added to textiles during the finishing stage, granting them the ability to inhibit the growth of odor-causing bacteria, mold, and mildew. This is a great feature to have in clothing, athletic equipment and household fabrics.
Currently, there are many antimicrobial finishing products on the market, either isolated agents or already in fiber or fabric form. Some are based on metal compounds (notably silver and copper particles), chitosan, quaternary ammonium compounds or halogenated phenols "triclosan".
While these chemicals can effectively kill bacteria, they can also create harmful breakdown products that leach into the environment, causing a disruption of the balance between microorganisms and their environment. As such, manufacturers need to carefully consider and monitor these chemicals’ effectiveness against bacterial resistance and environmental impact.
4. Flame-resistant
Technical fabrics with flame-resistant features keep workers safe during tasks that involve exposure to intense heat or fire. Fabrics like Nomex, which is often used in flight suits or bulletproof vests, can withstand temperatures that would melt most materials.
These fabrics have a char that consumes gaseous molecules that incite fire. They also use phosphorus agents to interrupt combustion, which prevents the fabric from releasing more fuel after initial flame contact.
Many companies that manufacture clothing from technology fabrics work with research and development (R&D) labs, such as the Rochester Institute of Technology’s Bal Dixit Laboratory for Advanced Materials and Fire Protection Research. These labs help them test products ahead of submitting them to standards bodies for certification. They can also perform simulated exposures to help them predict how fabric and garments will behave in real-world scenarios.
5. Durable
The durable features of Technology Fabric make it a great choice for the outdoors. It’s not only resistant to moisture, but also stains and tears. It is also very easy to clean. Simply vacuum and use dry cleaning methods to care for your clothing.
